“We need to stop conceding from set pieces” Stevie Moan Jan 08, 2018

Cliftonville Irish Cup Game

We have been playing good football in recent weeks, so this gave us a lot of confidence going in to this game. We started of the game brightly which seen a well worked move finished off by Marty Murray. We were then unlucky when Darren Murrays free kick hit the crossbar.  We continued to create chances and missed a great opportunity to go 2-0 up. Their first goal could maybe have been prevented if we had of been marking tighter from the free kick. We came out of the blocks slow at half time and because of this Cliftonville got a goal to put them 2-1 up. We then picked it up and started to play some good football again like we did in the first half. We then had a big advantage when they went down to 10 men for a straight red card. We created a few more chances which we did not convert. We finally got the equaliser when a long ball was hit over the top to Marty Murray who produced a good touch and a good finish. We no longer had the advantage of an extra man for extra time as Tipton got a red before the 90 minutes ended. After 90 minutes it was 2-2 with both teams down to 10 men going in to extra time. They got their third goal from a header from another set piece. Their forth shortly followed when we failed to clear the ball from another set piece and the ball fell kindly to one of their players who slotted it in. Lorcan Forde had the ball in the corner and pulled of a wonderful piece of skill to beat his man and he hit it into the box and the ball fell to Roohi who produced a good finish into the bottom corner. Overall, I think we gave a good account of ourselves at Solitude against a strong Cliftonville side. I think that we need to stay switched on and be more alert when defending set pieces as we have conceded a lot of goals from them this season.

Linfield Preview

We now turn our attention towards Linfield as we are back in league action against them this Saturday. We also have the advantage of playing at Milltown for this game. We recently drew 3-3 with Linfield at Windsor Park. If we can produce another performance like this we are well capable of picking up points. We also have a few new signings which will help give the team a boost.
